Lesson Application
Health and Physical Education
A1.5. Social Emotional Learning Skills, Self-Awareness and Sense of Identity: Apply skills that help them develop self-awareness and self-confidence as they participate in learning experiences in health and physical education, in order to support.
Students can develop a high degree of self-awareness by reflecting on what characteristics, experiences and ideas they associate with their authentic selves, and by further identifying what armour they use to hide their authentic selves. Uncovering their identities and normalizing insecurities or doubts can help students become more confident and willing to share. (Achieved in SET and GO activity)
Health and Physical Education
A1.3. Social Emotional Learning Skills, Positive Motivation and Perseverance: Apply skills that help them develop habits of mind that support positive motivation and perseverance as they participate in learning experiences in health and physical education, in order to promote a sense of optimism and hope.
By first piecing together, and then slowly removing the armour to reveal their authentic selves, students become inspired, empowered and motivated to also take off their armour in real life. A newfound sense of optimism emerges from students’ ability to envision a more appealing future.  (Achieved in GO activity)
Health and Physical Education
A1.4. Social Emotional Learning Skills, Healthy Relationships: Apply skills that help them build relationships, develop empathy, and communicate with others as they participate in learning experiences in health and physical education.
Debunking vulnerability myths ensures that all students are aware of the importance of boundaries, mutuality, and asking for support. These ideas help students become more mindful about what, when, why, and with whom they are sharing their stories. This kind of effective storytelling is the cornerstone of communication, relationships, and empathy. (Achieved in GO activity)
Language, Writing
2.5. Use of Knowledge of Form and Style in Writing: Identify their point of view and other possible points of view; determine, when appropriate, if their own view is balanced and supported by the evidence; and adjust their thinking and expression if appropriate.
During the art activity, students must write from their own point of view and they are challenged to consider how their current perspective might differ from reality. Students are also encouraged to consider how their points of view and experiences differ from their peers by reflecting on their description of their armour and authentic self. (Achieved in GO activity)
The Arts, Visual Arts
D1.1. Creating and Presenting: Create two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and multimedia artworks that explore feelings, ideas, and issues from a variety of points of view.
Students use the heart and shield artwork to explore their authentic self and how they armour up. Through this artistic expression, students discover a new point of view that helps them appreciate the consequences of armouring up and which inspires change.   (Achieved in GO activity)
The Arts, Visual Arts
D1.3. Creating and Presenting: Use elements of design in art works to communicate ideas, messages, and understandings.
Students have the opportunity to use a variety of shapes, colours, words, symbols, textures, and mediums to express their ideas. (Achieved in GO activity)
Character Development
Not applicable.
By learning to be vulnerable, students are learning to lean into discomfort and more fully experience their emotions and the world around them. A willingness to embrace vulnerability is essential for students to be able to feel more deeply, think more critically, and act more wisely.
