Lesson Application
Health and Physical Education
A1.4. Social Emotional Learning Skills, Health Relationships: Apply skills that help them build relationships, develop empathy, and communicate with others as they participate in learning experiences in health and physical education, in order to support healthy relationships, a sense of belonging, and respect for diversity
As students play the Band Aid Game, they experience the difference between equality and equity. Using critical thinking skills, they are then encouraged to challenge their preconceived ideas surrounding what is equal and what is fair. This will help to build respect and empathy toward other people and their individual needs or circumstances. In doing so, students will be able to contribute to the development of healthier relationships with their peers. (Achieved in the GO activity)
Language, Reading
1.8. Reading for Meaning, Responding to and Evaluating Texts: Make judgements and draw conclusions about ideas in texts and cite stated or implied evidence from the text to support their views
To complete the “Fair?” worksheet, students will read each scenario and determine whether each situation described is fair or unfair. Students will use the topics brought up in the discussion following the Band Aid activity to help them identify whether each scenario is fair or unfair and they will use evidence from the text, as well as their own ideas/understanding to support their reasoning.(Achieved in the GO activity)
Language, Reading
1.9. Reading for Meaning, Point of View: Identify the point of view presented in texts; determine whether they can agree with the view, in whole or in part; and suggest some other possible perspectives
As students complete the “Fair?” worksheet, they reflect on the point of view of each person in the situation to determine whether it is fair or unfair. If the situation is unfair, they will think about alternatives to make the situation fair for all people involved. (Achieved in the GO activity)
